Buying CBD Products or Seeking Medical Cannabis Care in the UK

Compare retail CBD products such as flowers and hash with the separate route of a specialist medical consultation and, where appropriate, a private prescription. Find out what to check before buying, how the clinical process works and why these options are not interchangeable.

The essentials at a glance

Before you start
  1. CBD flower and hash may be controlled cannabis under UK law, whatever their THC content or label.

  2. A medical route is a clinical process with a specialist doctor, not a shopping decision.

  3. Ask sellers in writing for the legal basis before you consider a purchase.

  4. Never change prescribed medicines without advice from your prescriber.

The situation

Why CBD flower and hash are not the same as a medical route

CBD products are sold across the UK in many forms, from oils and capsules to flower and hash. Flower and hash are cannabis products in many cases, and that changes the legal picture. Cannabis herb and cannabis resin are controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Labels such as hemp, low THC or not for smoking do not, on their own, make a product lawful to possess or sell. Before comparing sellers, check whether the product is controlled at all.

A medical consultation is a separate route. Medical cannabis products are prescribed by specialist doctors registered with the GMC, for named patients, after an assessment of medical history and whether other treatments have been considered. Nothing is guaranteed: a clinician may decline, and a prescription is not a promise of benefit. Read this guide with the legal section and the checklist in mind before you spend any money.

What matters

How to choose between product types and clinical routes

Start with the legal status, because it shapes every other decision. Cannabis herb and cannabis resin are controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 when they come from the cannabis plant. Possessing them is an offence, and producing or supplying them is more serious, regardless of THC content or how the product is marketed. Some CBD products made from isolated cannabidiol, or from hemp fibre and seed, are treated differently, but whether a particular product falls inside or outside controlled-drug rules depends on its composition, form and supply chain. A hemp label is not proof. Food and medicines rules add another layer, because the Food Standards Agency and the MHRA also shape how CBD may be sold. If a seller cannot explain the legal basis clearly in writing, treat that as a warning sign.

Next, compare the medical route on its own terms. A UK private consultation should involve a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register, a documented medical history and a clear explanation of alternatives. Ask whether the prescriber is independent of any sales business, how prescriptions are dispensed and what follow-up is included. Be wary of services that promise a result, present cannabis as a cure or pressure you to buy before the assessment. NHS prescribing of cannabis-based medicines is restricted to specific products and conditions, so a private route is a separate decision, not a cheaper version of the NHS.

A hemp label does not make a product lawful, so confirm the legal basis in writing before you compare sellers or prices.

From the editors

Common mistakes include assuming that a product is legal because it is sold online, buying flower or hash to treat a condition without medical advice, mixing products with medicines you already take, and comparing sellers by price alone. Do not start or stop prescribed medication because of a CBD product without speaking to your GP or prescriber. If you are unsure whether a product is lawful, do not buy it, and seek advice from a solicitor before going further.

The shortlist

What to check before you act

For each item we name a store where you can start comparing.

  1. Specialist medical consultation

A remote or in-person assessment with a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register. It is the starting point for any discussion of cannabis-based medicine in the UK.

  2. Private cannabis prescription

A prescription is issued only if a clinician judges it clinically appropriate. Expect a documented plan, follow-up and no guarantee of outcome.

First steps

A practical plan for the next step

Begin with the question of whether you need a medical assessment at all. If a condition is being treated, or you are considering cannabis-based medicine, look first at Releaf (releaf.co.uk), which offers medical consultations and private prescriptions and can explain the clinical steps. Ask in writing what the consultation includes, who the prescriber is and how any medicine would be supplied. Keep your GP informed throughout.

If you are only looking at products, check the law before opening a seller such as TealerLab (tealerlab.uk) or HempHash (hemphash.co.uk), which list CBD flower and hash. Listing a product does not make it lawful. Read the legal explanation on the product page, and if the seller cannot clearly say why the product is permitted, leave it. For questions about ordinary prescription collection, E-Surgery (e-surgery.com) can help, but confirm first that it can dispense anything your clinic prescribes.

To tick off

Before you order

  • Confirm whether the product is cannabis flower, cannabis resin or another form before comparing sellers.
  • Ask the seller in writing for the legal basis under UK drug and food rules.
  • Do not buy if the legal position is unclear or the seller cannot explain it.
  • Prepare a list of your current medicines and any conditions before a clinical consultation.
  • Ask who the prescriber is, how the assessment works and what follow-up is included.
  • Keep your GP or prescriber informed before starting any cannabis-based product.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is CBD flower or hash legal to buy in the UK?

Not automatically. Cannabis herb and resin are controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, and a hemp or low-THC label does not by itself make a product lawful. Check the legal basis before buying, and do not buy if it is unclear.

Is CBD oil the same as CBD flower?

No. Oils and capsules are often regulated under food or medicines rules, while flower and hash can fall under controlled-drug law. Ask whether a product is controlled before comparing prices.

What happens at a medical cannabis consultation?

A UK doctor on the GMC Specialist Register reviews your medical history, current treatments and alternatives. A prescription is only issued if they judge it appropriate, and there is no guarantee of benefit.

Should I stop my medicines if I start a CBD product?

Do not change prescribed medication without speaking to your GP or prescriber. Cannabis products can interact with other medicines, so disclose everything you take.
